Former London Officer Gets 36 Life Sentences for Series of Rapes During Career

David Carrick, a former Metropolitan Police office in London, England, was sentenced to 36 life sentences after being convicted of carrying out a number of rapes and sexual assaults on 12 women over a 17-year period. Carrick previously pleaded guilty to 49 charges, including 24 counts of rape. Those counts carried multiple offenses, including at least 71 sexual offenses and 48 rapes. All of the offenses were carried out while he was an officer. Mrs. Justice Cheema-Grubb told Carrick during his sentencing, "These convictions represent a spectacular downfall for a man charged with upholding the law and empowered to do so even to the extent of being authorized to bear a firearm in the execution of your duty. Behind a public appearance of propriety and trustworthiness, you took monstrous advantage of women."
